Once you have applied for your K53 test and been given a date for your learners test, purchase a K53 manual and start studying immediately. The K53 test will be either a written or computer test which takes approximately one hour to complete. You will be questioned on the rules of the road, road signs and markings, and vehicle controls.

The rules of the road ensure a smooth flow of traffic and stipulate rules such as:

K53 Test - Road Signs, Signals and Markings
Roadside signs, traffic signals and road surface markings are there to regulate traffic flow. They provide all the necessary information to road users, warn of any hazardous conditions and give direction indicators of routes and destinations.
These can be:
● mounted on a pole on the side of the road ● mounted on an overhead structure
● painted on the road surface
● signals given by lights or people

- warning signs
- guidance signs
- temporary
- road markings
K53 Test – Vehicle Controls
For this section of the K53 test you will need to know the correct name and function of the various vehicle controls, such as the mirrors, clutch, accelerator and brake pedal, gear lever and indicator stalk.
It is a good idea to practice for your K53 test learners license by completing past tests so that you are well prepared and familiar with the rules of the road, know how to react when you see road signs, signals and markings and the purpose and names of the vehicle controls.
